To help children prepare for a summer of safe bicycle riding, the employees of East River Electric Power Cooperative will host their annual Bicycle Safety Day. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at St. Thomas School in Madison.
Youngsters ages 4-12 are invited learn about the rules of the road and practice them on a bicycle safety course. Admission to this bicycle-safety refresher course is free and lots of activities are planned. First, the kids will watch a bicycle safety video and learn safety tips from police in the St. Thomas Gym. While the children are watching the program, East River employees will inspect bicycles to see if the brakes, tires and other components are in good working condition.
Door prizes, including brand-new bicycles, helmets and other items, will be awarded through a drawing. Refreshments will be served. Following the indoor activities, children will able to ride their bicycles through the Safety Course in the school parking lot.
Also, families may register their bicycles with the Madison Police Department to assist with recovery in case of loss or theft. Police officers will offer free bicycle registration/licensing during the event.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children and stay for the event, which reminds everyone about safe-riding practices, just in time for bicycle season. By hosting Bicycle Safety Day and other civic events, East River Electric employees demonstrate the Touchstone Energy Value of commitment to community.
