South Dakota Wind Energy Association Seeks Alignment of Local Businesses With Wind Energy Projects

September 23, 2009

As a way to facilitate the development of wind energy projects within South Dakota and harvest local dollars, the South Dakota Wind Energy Association (SDWEA) has created a webpage that allows businesses to register available goods and services with the organization, which is then shared with wind developers.

“Out of state developers and many businesses aren’t registered or aligned with anyone, making it difficult to know what services are available. This registry identifies who wants to work on wind projects and what they can offer with the potential of being placed on a bidding list or a request work list,” said Steve Wegman, SDWEA executive director.

Businesses can register their information on the webpage http://www.sdwind.org/business. SDWEA only shares the information with bona-fide wind developers that are actively pursuing or in the process of constructing a wind project within South Dakota.

One example of how joining a South Dakota local business with a wind developer has been dually beneficial is by the combined efforts of three families who created a catering business for the Titan Wind Project in Ree Heights, S.D.  With limited ways to feed the construction crews in such a remote location, the onsite catering service prepares breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.

“This is another aspect of the importance of community development for wind energy projects in our state.” Wegman said. “There is a lot more toward establishing a wind farm than putting up the turbines.”
